The River Severn offers a distinctive sailing experience that's quite different from sailing on reservoirs or the sea. While the river is relatively narrow, it provides the opportunity to sail for miles in either direction, with the safety of the riverbanks always nearby.

Unlike sailing in open waters, river sailing at Avon Sailing Club combines the tranquility of inland waterways with the adventure of exploring scenic routes through the countryside.

From our club location, members can sail approximately 2 miles upstream to Tewkesbury or 5 miles downstream toward Gloucester.

Those with cruisers and a full river license have the opportunity to travel even further, exploring more of the beautiful River Severn and its surroundings.

We organize a variety of river sailing activities throughout the year:

• Long Distance Races: Our most popular racing format features a single upstream buoy, providing an exciting challenge for competitive sailors.
• Family Weekend Trips: Enjoy quality time with family while exploring the river together.
• Summer Week Sail-Away: Extended sailing adventures during the summer months.
• Group Outings: Organized trips that often include lunch stops at scenic riverside pubs.

These events offer great opportunities to improve your sailing skills, socialize with fellow members, and make the most of our beautiful river setting.

The club supports a variety of boat types for river sailing:

• Dinghies of various classes
• Small yachts and cruisers

For cruiser owners, we have nine river moorings available, allowing for convenient access to the water.
