Avon Sailing Club has a rich heritage spanning over 70 years of sailing on the River Severn.
Since 1949, Avon Sailing Club has been providing sailing opportunities for enthusiasts in the Gloucestershire area. From humble beginnings with just eight founding members, the club has grown into a thriving community of sailors with excellent facilities and a strong racing tradition.
Through the decades, the club has adapted to changing locations and sailing environments, always maintaining its commitment to fostering a love of sailing and racing excellence.
Avon Sailing Club was born on October 8, 1949, at an inaugural meeting held at Newton House, Tewkesbury. Eight founder members, including Lt. Col. Alex Hattrell, initially aimed to reform the Severn Sailing Club but after that proved unsuccessful, they established the "Avon Sailing Club" in late November 1949.
The first AGM was held in January 1950 at the White Bear Inn, with Leo Robinson becoming the first Commodore. The club initially operated from Beech Boatyard in Tewkesbury, where the first races were held.
Membership grew rapidly, from 38 members with 9 boats in 1950 to 90 members with 28 boats by 1952. The club began establishing its traditions with the first club dance in 1951, and Cheltenham College became the first affiliated club in 1952.
In 1953, the club relocated to Twyning, marking a period of significant growth. Membership nearly doubled during this time, increasing from 140 to approximately 250 members.
This period established the club as a significant presence in the local sailing community, with expanding racing activities and social events.
The year 1960 marked a pivotal moment in the club's history with the purchase of land at Chaceley Stock, where the club remains to this day. This acquisition provided a permanent home and allowed for significant facility development.
In 1961, the clubhouse was built and officially opened by Joan Green. This permanent base has enabled the club to flourish and develop its reputation for excellent sailing and racing.
Throughout its history, Avon Sailing Club has produced excellent racers who have achieved success at regional and national levels.
Club members have won national championships in Merlin Rocket and National 12 classes, reflecting the club's strong racing heritage.
Perhaps the club's most notable achievement is producing Joe Richards, who went on to win an Olympic Bronze medal and become a professional yacht designer.
Today, Avon Sailing Club continues to thrive at its Chaceley Stock location, with excellent facilities that have been continuously improved over the decades.
The club maintains its tradition of competitive racing while also welcoming novice sailors, providing training, and fostering a community atmosphere that has characterized the club since its founding in 1949.
As we look to the future, Avon Sailing Club remains committed to promoting the sport of sailing on the River Severn for generations to come.
