Racing Overview

Our club offers exciting racing opportunities for sailors of all abilities. Racing at Avon Sailing Club is competitive yet friendly, with a focus on improving skills and having fun on the water. Whether you're an experienced racer or new to competitive sailing, our varied program has something for everyone. We use handicap systems to ensure fair competition between different boat classes.

Sunday Race Series

Our main racing days with multiple races throughout the day.

  • First Race: Typically starts at 11:45
  • Afternoon Races: Usually two races starting at 13:45 and 15:30
  • Tea & Cakes: in between races 2 & 3
  • Format: Pursuit races and fleet racing with handicaps
  • Race Officer Briefing: 11:30 at the OD box

Race Formats

We offer different race formats to keep our racing program varied and exciting:

  • Fleet Racing: Using Portsmouth Yardstick handicaps
  • Pursuit Races: Different start times based on boat handicaps
  • Average Lap Racing: For mixed fleets with varying speeds
  • Special Formats: For regattas and events
  • Maximum race duration of one hour

Training and Coaching

Improve your racing skills with dedicated training days:

  • Race Coaching: Selected Sundays including May 26, 2024
  • New Racer Sessions: Introduction to racing
  • Rules Workshops: Understanding racing rules
  • Start Practice: Focused training on race starts

Race Management

Race Officer Duties

  • • Race Officer duties rotate among club members
  • • Briefing for Sunday racing at 10:30
  • • Committee boat and safety boat duties
  • • Results posted on club website after races

Racing Rules

  • • Racing follows RYA Racing Rules of Sailing
  • • Special club variations in sailing instructions
  • • Scoring using high point percentage system
  • • Personal handicap adjustments for regular racers
